STREETWISE
CATNIP
NEPETA CATARIA

Cats are not the only ones benefiting from catnip—mice like it too- much to our amazement and consternation most of the catmint cuttings at the farm were breakfast, lunch and supper for the mickey mice hanging out under the rosemary. Maybe they were stressed by the mess that working for water made on the adjoining land. How do inept government contractors get away with such shoddy workmanship.

As a nervine, its use for anxiety and insomnia is likely due to a lactone and citronellal, some of catnips components.Having trouble sleeping; a cup of catmint tea before going to bed enhances sleep. A bit of honey and lemon and cinnamon with a teaspoon of catmint to a cup of near boiling water and let it brew for 10 to 15minutes and pleasant dreams.

Like most herbs and natural medicine, the many different chemical components work together and support each other giving an overall healing effect which is not toxic unlike the mainstream pharmaceutical practice of isolating a single active ingredient from the plant and synthesizing just that one complex.Without the complementary effect of the sometimes 1000s of other components of the whole plant, side effects do occur.

The pace of society encourages fast foods which may ultimately be just packaged and frozen aids to filling the gap in the doctors’ waiting rooms. Home made soups and meals are less common and digestive system ailments are on the increase. Cramps, indigestion, gas, upset tummy heartburn are so common, we pay little attention to them apart from a quick powder or pill fix which in the long term have side effects on the walls of the digestive system.

A teaspoon of catmint leaves steeped for 10 to 15 minutes in a cup of boiling water won’t reverse your eating habits but as an anti spasmodic it does relax the smooth muscle of the intestines and alleviates digestive pains and therapeutic to the digestive system. Drink freely three times a day
Really is not understandable how generally time management does not allow for a small salad a day which would go far to preventing illness. To consider a time of quiet reflection or meditation a day may be going too extreme yet these are the things that ultimately restore sanity and health.

Traditionally, Catnip was used for the flu and colds—not much research has been done in that field and it may be the relaxing aspect on the smooth muscles and its slight anti bacterial effect that gives catnip that quality of action that also helps with bronchitis. The diaphoretic property increases perspiration and helps to break the fever.

Catmint is children friendly and is a great herb to use for calming, stomach upsets and diarrhoea.

As a sedative and pain killer it has its uses. It may need much more research to find the reasons for that action.Even though it works, for some reason we demand scientific proof-must make us feel evolved.Much research is financed by the large pharmaceuticals-Bayer, Syngerta, Monsanto and the direction they point the research is toward increasing bottom line so herbs will only come into their own big time when the side effects and cost of allopathic drugs are truly recognised.

Breaking news is that catnip oil is a very potent mosquito repellent. With malaria back in the picture with the failure of antibiotics, the current research is very promising.

When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing. Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.

The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.

Guidance with professional health practitioners from the naturopath, sangoma, dietician, alternative healer to a MD is an responsible course of action when dealing with any substance affecting your health.

IN MOST CASES WE REFER TO DRIED HERB WHEN ADVOCATING AMOUNTS IN TEASPOON FOR TEAS .

DOUBLE THE AMOUNT WHEN USING FRESH HERB.

These herb properties are directly connected to and derived from the forces of nature - if you want to call it Godhead, Greater hierarchy, Krishna, Yaveh, Allah, it does not matter—these are the forces that we can trust today. So treat the herbs with the respect due to a great natural force, never mind the ravings of a semi lunatic political, media force doing their best to undermine common sense.
Prevention is better than cure.

In the next newsletter we will deal with GARLIC in the series called Kitchen wise - talking about medicinal properties of the usual herbs found in the kitchen.

ANTIBIOTICS PART 2

Becoming widespread is the story of someone going to hospital for a minor treatment and dying from some resistant bacterial infection- ring a bell ?

Antibiotic resistance is when toxic bacteria become immune to antibiotics that were once effective against them. The major cause of this is the overuse of pharmaceutical antibiotics and massive dosing of animals on factory farms.
For profit of course, using low dosages of antibiotics stimulate weight gain –from fat pig to fat cat.

So hospitals and factory farms become dangerous places to hang round—not for bacteria as they thrive in the hospital environment. With so many antibiotics around it gives them access to discover their resistance mechanisms and from there, the resistant bacteria spread via people, unhygenic food and effluent.
Antibiotics are not very biodegradable- they end up in the environment---millions of kilos of antibiotics!

The problem is that the antibiotics now act as pheromones and attract bacteria and in the presence of antibiotics the learning process speeds up drastically. A dismal future picture when you consider that all industrialized countries’ water contain minute traces of antibiotics so the bacteria are getting taught on an ongoing basis.
It would be so nice and a miracle probably if the education ministry recognised that education is actually important and the department and most of the others are not just a vehicle for arrogant undeserving friends to receive handouts----in comparison,to our ancestors, the bacterium, the education system in this country is a faint black confused dot on the horizon.

Bacterial methods of resistance differ from any classic pattern---they don’t act like terrorists, crusaders or parliamentarians:: looking to create discord.
Like a passive resistor, When the antibiotic comes, the pathogen can change its wall structure preventing antibiotic penetration.
Like a ninja, it can change its morphology so camouflaging itself so the antibiotic does not know where to go. It cant attach itself to the usual niche in the wall and so is ineffective. ----- Some bacteria produce enzyme missiles that disable antibiotics
Some bacteria have a pump system that pumps the antibiotics out as fast as it comes in.
Once a bacteria learns a method of resistance, it passes it on—it goes viral and has lots more viewers than twitter and face book.

When it is indaba time they don’t waste time drinking beer, they immediately share resistance information.
More sophisticated than Ipad, and cloud systems they encode DNA strands and pass them on—called plasmids they act as memory sticks.

Bacterial viruses also pass along the info and they have jumping genes which can insert into the hereditary material and gets passed on to future generations. These guys are really organised—department of home affairs could take a lesson from them. All bacteria species work together - no religious, tribal battles and xenophobia.

Many antibiotics are developed from fungi and rest assured that bacteria have definitely come into contact with those fungi and have dealt with them long ago. Perhaps if we had not been so liberal with the use of antibiotics, things may have worked out differently.
Unlike humans, bacteria cooperate and whenever possible their knowledge of how to live with the threat of antibiotics. They have been doing that for 3 billion years and have survived.

Many friendly bacteria have helped us survive. The mother’s womb is a sterile environment and when the child is born and suckled, bacteria from the nipple and milk enter and engage with mutual benefit to both.
Many of the friendly bacteria express a natural antibiotic against detrimental bacteria.
Need to remember that when antibiotics work, they also kill of the friendly bacteria, which protect us and cause serious side effects and imbalance to the body organism.

With a lifespan of 20 minutes, what one-generation has learnt can be passed on and refined within a short time. In 1 hour a bacterium could learn what takes us 210years.
We may be in serious trouble one day with the advent of a pathogen more virulent than anything in history and we need to look at herbal antibiotics and herbs which can serve humanity in the time of deadly epidemics and in our time.
We will continue in further newsletters on types of detrimental bacteria and food and herbs and natural methods of probiotics. (antibiotics = against life)
