An overview of different herbal realities focusing on the medicinal value of plants, indigenous herbs of South Africa
and aspects of the herbal industry that affect the person in the street.

• Fluoride and Fluorosis part 1
Cinnamon is not grown in the yards of supermarkets as many young socially conscious face book and twitter addicts may guess. Fabled caravans from the east carried this spicy herb to the west for cooking and medical aids for stomach, chest and blood ailments.
In the same way that we don’t respond anymore to violence and a mythical governments’ abuse of power so also is the powder of the inner cleaned bark of the cinnamon tree hardly noticed and passed over notwithstanding its pleasant aroma due to its content of volatile oils cinnamaldehyde and eugenol.
The cinnamaldehyde is responsible for cinnamons benefits in preventing blood clotting and has been well researched. It helps to prevent platelets from clumping together by inhibiting the release of arachidonic acid. This also causes it to be a powerful anti-inflammatory.
Confer with your medical person before going that way as its blood thinning properties are potent
One teaspoon per day has more power than the promises of corrupt top-heavy gravy trainers and self-righteous religious leaders whose words don’t have the authority of Gods' medicine.
When making a tea of cinnamon sticks, do not boil for more than a few minutes or the taste will become bitter.
Helen of Troy launched a thousand ships to partake of the Trojan wars, so too cinnamon had the Portuguese, Dutch and English battle for the spice from the east that heightens the sleepy mind-----sniffing the powder or oil improves memory, awakens dull senses, improves attention and motor function and undoes the damage done by our primitive media systems. So after watching the news a half-teaspoon of cinnamon is beneficial.
Even though the properties are similar, the true cinnamon is preferred, not the cassia available from Chinese cinnamon a substitute cassia plant, Cinnamomum Cassia.
As well as a powder, cinnamon is available in tablets, oil form and capsules from health shops.
Phytotherapists in conjunction with reputable scientific institutes use cinnamon for diabetes type 2 patients where insulin activity is increased and it helps absorption of glucose from the blood---here care needs to be taken as it may interact with standard diabetic drugs so see your phytotherapist or medical advisor when going that way.
Anti cancer properties are attributed to cinnamon but be sure that the cancer lobby will refute that—too many jobs at stake. The use of cinnamon as an anti bacterial anti fungal especially for athlete’s foot also requires more investigation.
Cinnamon targets bone cells to stimulate bone growth so in osteoporosis it could be a useful aid.
We need to remember that we live in what the Vedas—ancient Indian texts, call the Kali Yuga—the dark ages---this is quite evident when you look at the chaos reported happening in South Africa and the four corners of the planet. There are no governments to play a role in governing just politicians and fat cat businessmen so busy kissing and climbing up each other’s backsides while the general populace is ignored. It may be the norm but certainly not humane.
Perhaps In the darkness, we have lost the art of really caring and understanding the sick. ----Science corroborates most of the traditional uses of herbs and medicines yet all beings evolve differently and real healing is a one to one with the patient and on the healers side a one to one with the healing modality. The doctor takes the word of the pharmaceutical rep and the herbalist takes the word of the current information about the herb as transmitted by the book or Internet.
I am not saying healing does not take place, it will and possibly much helped through the patient’s belief
Cinnamon is well recognized for loss of appetite and digestive disorders such as bloating and flatulence. It has been used for weight gain.
Perhaps the demand for instant sanity and health requires more responsible care.
Sickness is not instant and it takes a time to manifest, so too does the healing process.
It applies to both alternative and orthodox healers and surgeons –quick to cut is not quick to heal. and the demand for instant gratification if met, may not heal in the longer term.
Perhaps healers need to be more responsible and modify the patient’s expectation of instant healing in this so called enlightened time of healing. How many blogs and tweets just glorify the personality and even give a slight indication of old values such as honesty, loyalty, reverence to parents, consideration for others and other outdated notions.
One of the exceptions in our time was a healer, Edward Bach who was a very successful Harley street physician, He left his practice and as a recluse communed with plants who showed him their secrets and evolved the Bach flower remedies. A series of flower remedies for many different emotional states.if it has not been abused by the executors, it is an interesting modality.
Considering giving up smoking: inhaling through a quill of cinnamon (the rolled up stick of cinnamon) seems to be an effective aid.
One of the other health benefits of cinnamon is that it has calcium and fiber, which can help protect the colon and heart.
It is also a source of manganese and iron. The calcium and the fiber bind to bile salts and can remove them from the body. Once this bile is removed, the body has to break down cholesterol to make new bile so this can help lower cholesterol level as well.
When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing. Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.
The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.
Guidance with professional health practitioners from the naturopath, sangoma, dietician, alternative healer to a MD is an responsible course of action when dealing with any substance affecting your health.

IN MOST CASES WE REFER TO DRIED HERB WHEN ADVOCATING AMOUNTS IN TEASPOON FOR TEAS .
DOUBLE THE AMOUNT WHEN USING FRESH HERB.
These herb properties are directly connected to and derived from the forces of nature - if you want to call it Godhead, Greater hierarchy, Krishna, Yaveh, Allah, it does not matter—these are the forces that we can trust today. So treat the herbs with the respect due to a great natural force, never mind the ravings of a semi lunatic political, media force doing their best to undermine common sense.
Prevention is better than cure.
In the next newsletter we will deal with Yarrow in the series called Streetwise - talking about medicinal properties of herbs found growing in the streets, garden and the wild.
FLUORIDE AND FLUOROSIS
Recent evidence indicates that Fluorine is NOT essential for humans. It is present in the human body in the form of Fluoride.
Fluoride’s main if not only health benefits occur when it is applied topically to the Teeth. No human disease has ever been linked with a Fluoride deficiency. Fluoride is poisonous. Relatively low concentrations have been shown conclusively to have detrimental effects on human and animal development
A single dosage of 2,000 mg 1/10th of a teaspoon of Fluoride may be lethal to adults and a single dosage of 500 mg may be lethal to children.
Average Human Intake
The daily dose of Fluoride, which most people are receiving via fluoridation of Water supplies, is 1.6 to 6.6 mg per day.
How ethical can it be to force a medication onto people. Even if it helps, and so free choice becomes the choice of a few ?—conider this.
Benefits of Fluoride
Fluoride (applied topically) may inhibit the enzymes in acid-producing bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of Tooth Decay.
Fluoridation of water has not been shown to reduce the incidence of cavities.fluoridated toothpastes and rinces may work yet the incidence of decreased cavities matches the incidence of cavitys where water is not fluoridated
Master marketing from pharmaceuticals - fluoridated mouth rinses for children under 6 so they are getting an extra wallop that way. Phew!
Studies show that children up to 7years cannot rinse without swallowing…for instance 50% of the toothpaste on a brush could be swallowed.
With The flavoured childens toothpaste it may be an idea to keep those out of your childs reach
Other Sources of Fluoride
Herbs: Rooibos and Black Tea are especially high in fluorine.
Processed Foods: Many processed foods and beverages prepared with fluoridated water contain Fluoride.
Water: Drinking Water is fortified with Fluoride in many countries - this process is known as Fluoridation. The daily dose of Fluoride, which most people are receiving via fluoridation, is 1.6 to 6.6 mg per day. The concentration of Fluoride added to drinking water is 0.7 – 1.2 mg per litre.
It's impossible to control the dose. People drink different amounts of water, so the fluoride dose cannot be regulated .
Too much of a good thing as the Fluoride that we put in water today will still be in water tomorrow. It is not a simple matter to remove the fluoride from water or from the plants and animals that ingest it.
Sodium Fluoride (NaF) consists of 28% Fluoride + 72% Sodium. It is a by-product of Aluminium refining that never occurs in nature. The body very easily absorbs Sodium Fluoride but excessive intake is toxic. This form of Fluoride is an active constituent of some commercial brands of Toothpaste and is the form of Fluoride that is added to the Water supply in some countries.
Other forms of Fluoride
Aluminium Fluoride is formed when Aluminium in drinking water bonds with Fluoride in drinking Water.
Calcium Fluoride is a supplemental form of Fluoride that consists of Calcium bound to Fluoride. Supplemental Fluoride is no longer recommended.
Silicofluorides are a group of Fluorides produced as a by-product during the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers. Approximately 90% of the Water supply in the USA is fluoridated with Silicofluorides.
We will complete the fluoride article in the next newsletter.
