Since time does not allow most of us to read long newsletters, this newsletter will only deal with one herb at a time starting with the series kitchenwise and streetwise.

The Voortrekkers learnt a lesson from the Koi when they made biltong for the trek.The Dutch copied from the Greeks who uaed coriander as an antibacterial. It kept Salmonella away thus avoiding gastric upsets, diarrhea and as a preservative it kept the food ok for a longer trip.
I suspect the coriander was an afterthought as the Koi did not have access to dhania (coriander) at that time.

Shows how the traditional use of a herb or spice has so much authority. At the time of the great trek, science had not yet verified the properties of many herbs.

The antibiotic properties are attributed to Dodecenal and eight other antibiotics and the preservative qualities to its high content of anti oxidants.
The label hype of anti oxidants is just a marketing ploy, most fruit and many vegetables especially garlic are abundant with anti oxidants. Beer and red wine for the pub crawlers are your best bet for their antioxidant properties. It is worth looking at labels to see what you are putting into the temple wherein the spirit resides.One of the finest anti oxidants is rosemary.

During the course of energy creation in the cells, a free radical is released. It usually has a short lifespan and is removed by oxidation. We produce millions every minute and if a diet rich in hamburgers and not so healthy foods is followed, the free radicals form a chain reaction and may cause so much damage. From aging to blood clotting, dementia to high cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis to male infertility.
A mixture of cloves, coriander, ginger,cinnamon and cardamon was marketed for male infertility but was later banned due to its potency.

If you are a belcher then a few crushed seeds slipped in to your food or drink may save embarrassment especially if your company is one of those supersensitive prudes whose narrow mind verbalizes obnoxiously “you are so rude”—phew, get a life. Yes it’s rude in our society but so is murder and rape and often belching is not deliberate and really due to food ingredients.

The use of coriander in Iran has increased as it is used there for anxiety and insomnia. I guess we would all suffer from that if America kept threatening to bolster its arms production and export business by invading your neighbourhood.

I don’t understand politics but it appears clear that the basic requirements for a politician today is the ability to bull-st, self indulgence, irreverence to common peoples needs and lack of conscience amongst others ----Considering their eating habits, how many politicians take a mixture for heartburn and constipation would make interesting reading. Coriander is used in many Senna based formulae to modify the disturbing effect Senna has on the stomach walls. So with the bribe give your local political rep a packet of coriander seed.
Imagine if you got on a stage with many world leaders and were booed by your own support base---send your pal a big packet of coriander seed to lower the blood sugar level and the upset tummy for comfort.

Usual dosage is a teaspoon of crushed or powdered seed to a cup of hot water and steep for as long as possible.

Likely that you have coriander and cumin seed in the kitchen so if you wake up in the morning and you have thick ankles and your hands are double the size, obvious water retention, and your doctor cant see you because he or she is on the golf course, mix a teaspoon of both, add to hot water and use as a diuretic.
Check with your physician for side effects when you get a diuretic or any pharmaceutical drug. Most of the modern drugs today have side effects which often are worse than the original condition you went in for.
Coriander has no side effects, ok during pregnancy and lactation and no interactions with other drugs.

No tests I know of have been done on humans regarding the ability of coriander to lower the total blood cholesterol. What research has been done indicates that the bad cholesterol is lowered and the good cholesterol is increased. It appears to work by increasing the production of bile and thus the breakdown of cholesterol.

Remember that a herb or spice is not an isolated substance, they are part of a greater network that works to heal and has been neglected by our mental drives. For feeling has the means to open our hearts to the healing process and when the feeling is good the heart and soul are also comforted.

When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing.Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.

The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.

These herb properties are directly connected to and derived from the forces of nature - if you want to call it Godhead, Greater hierarchy, Krishna, Yaveh, Allah, it does not matter—these are the forces that we can trust today. So treat the herbs with the respect due to a great natural force, never mind the ravings of a semi lunatic political, media force doing their best to undermine common sense.

Diabetes part 2

Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 is a form of Diabetes Mellitus. Persons afflicted with this form of Diabetes Mellitus have elevated Insulin levels but the Cells of the body that rely on Insulin are resistant to its actions (i.e. Insulin Resistance), thus, Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 is regarded as an extreme form of Insulin Resistance. Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 accounts for 90% to 95% of cases of Diabetes Mellitus.

To compensate for the resistance to insulin, the body produces massive quantities of Insulin in an attempt to influence Insulin-dependent Cells. The insulin then penetrate non-Insulin-dependent Tissues such as the Eyes, Nerves and Arteries, accounting for the various complications that accompany Diabetes Mellitus Type 2.

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas and a little in the brain. It functions to maintain a normal blood glucose level and also has some effects on the brain such as alertness and Alzheimer’s disease.

A simple spice, Cinnamon helps the efficient functions of insulin.
Fenugreek has been used for yonks for insulin imbalance and diabetes. To make fenugreek sprouts is so very easy.

I wonder if most diabetics are sedentary and the easiest way to ignore the symptoms is a pill. Exercise is not so exciting.
Part of the misconceptions amongst diabetics is that the pills will help cure the illness.
Metformin is a common panacea, which is derived from the herb Goats Rue (French honeysuckle, Galega officinalis). Unfortunately because just only the “active ingredient” was synthesized and all the natural plant helpers ignored, it may have side effects.

This is further complicated by the food that is bought and eaten irrespective of the lack of knowledge of what is in the food. When last did you look at a label to see if it had aspartame or some other poison in it---really if you are diabetic and don’t read ingredients, don’t expect miracle cures---“God helps those who help themselves.”
This again is further complicated by the mother giving the kids sweets and junk food to calm them---so what is a social disease—one that is helped along by all members of the tribal unit in order to maintain a superficial state of peace in the immediate area and that has been ongoing since childhood.
As you get older the body is not as vigorous and the onset of complications and symptoms becomes apparent.

So diabetes mellitus usually occurs in people over the age of 40 and Approximately 20% of Caucasians between the ages of 65 and 75 are afflicted with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2. and at that age do not want to hear anything new regarding their eating habits and medication.

The incidence of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 has tripled during the period 1984-1999 and I predict we are going to see massive increases and also amongst younger people.
I guess mainly as a result of the junk food mania, which is the norm throughout all levels of society.

Substances that Treat and Prevent Diabetes Type 2

Polyphenols such as Quercetin, Pycnogel, Hesperidin and Curcumin found in fruits (high in red grapes and berries) and vegetables decrease the blood glucose level. Curcumin is found in turmeric.
Polyphenols are a group of food substances as important to well being as are vitamins.

Vitamin A, B3 and B12, Vitamin E and K, may help treatment. A lack of vitamin D is often associated with diabetes type 2.

Food and Herbs that Treat and Prevent Diabetes Type 2

Not to be used as an excuse for excessive indulgence, research indicates that moderate Red Wine may help to prevent Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and may minimize some of the complications associated with Diabetes Mellitus

Again the berry family are useful especially Bilberry and cranberry. A short quick fix to lower blood glucose levels is the guava.

Instead of junk food, try grains for breakfast. Oats and brans will lower the risk. The health food section of your local supermarket and the local health shop are there for a good reason. Of course it is always appropriate to support the local privately owned health shop. Chains may be convenient but you will learn nothing there.
A good health shop will have lots of tips.

Carrots and pumpkin are very good for prevention.

Wilde dagga has been used traditionally for treatment and as it is an indigenous herb is freely available as is Buchu.

A tea mixture of nettle, rue, wild sage, fenugreek seed, cinnamon and ginger is a great substitute for coffee and a really potent diabetic preventative. Of course to take a tea once and to expect immediate results is often not the case. You will need to show some sort of effort, which warrants the result.

You could always add some Chili or Cayenne pepper to your food instead of black pepper.
If you have a friend with an olive tree, get some leaves for a tea---hopefully the tree is organically grown—the pesticides etc used on fruit and vegetables really are harmful.

If you can get some real garlic not that imported white Chinese irradiated excuse, and include that in your salad with tomato and cider vinegar, you will be going a long way to remaining healthy.
A creative salad is a healthy salad and a few nuts such as pecans, hazels and almonds with a touch of linseed (flax seed either whole or ground) is a self-bestowed blessing.

So Food is your best medicine and likely that diabetics owe “health” to some general foods working behind the scenes To normalize the imbalances e.g. cabbage (coleslaw).

Stevia is a herb which is being used instead of sugar—apart from the sweetness it is good for diabetics. Comes in powder or pill form from a health shop and supermarkets. I like the leaf of the herb itself---half a leaf = sweetness of 2.5 teaspoon sugar and easily grow on the kitchen ledge.

So what’s the balance in a society with chemical and pesticide, rich food? You can go organic, plant your own, join an organic co op. Start with doing your own sprouts, so easy and a great source of vitamins minerals and essential nutrients.(see newsletter no 19)
