Since time does not allow most of us to read long newsletters, this newsletter will only deal with one herb at a time starting with the series kitchenwise and streetwise.

Cumin is an essential ingredient of curry and as such is usually found in the kitchen in either powder or seed form.
The seed can be used as a tea—half teaspoon to 1-cup hot water but it is usually used as an additive to season food.
Humans are systematically destroying the balance of nature-----spilt oil drillings, deforestation of Africa and South America, plastic pollution in the ocean on a horrific scale.
What creature initiates this desecration----what concern do they have for their children and grandchildren. How dead are they in reality in their mad rush for total power and sadly they are respected by a befuddled mass.
Nature may balance that action. It is predicted that in 30 years there will be no more fish in the ocean. Already no pilchards nearby, so one-day snoek will be as extinct as the duckbill platypus and what happened to the great sardine runs in Natal?
The food you eat is so filled with chemicals and antibiotics, it had made humans dull to the call of nature.
And unless we change, the awakening will not be pleasant
Already, Helicobacter pylori are recognized as the most prevalent Bacteria to infect humans in the world. With the advent of resistance to antibiotics, natural preventatives and treatment are becoming increasingly important.
Cumin has been part of Ayurvedic medicine (traditional Indian herbal practise) for centuries. The art of Ayer Veda includes a very advanced type of Herbology and is becoming very popular in the west where the art of Herbology is mostly in an infant stage. It may be surprising how few herbalists can identify the herbs they use in the wild.
Like most herbs and spices the multi tasking ability of cumin is staggering.
Stomach upsets, morning sickness and diarrhoea are treated with cumin.
Adding cumin to the diet as a seasoning resulted in lower sugar levels in diabetics and a decrease in body fats and cholesterol levels.
Research into various cancers indicates that cumin is effective as a treatment and preventative.
In colon cancer, Cumin seeds regulate the release of toxic substances by certain enzymes so Cumin seeds inhibited carcinogen-induced infiltration into the submucosa and prevent colon cell cytoplasm changes.
In Israel it was shown that cumin has anti cancer properties in prostrate and bladder cancers.
More and more it is being noted that diet pays a big role in illness, both acute and chronic-----this is alarming considering 2 factors.
1. Medical training at University is limited. Perhaps 0001% of the medical courses deal with diet and illness and in a superficial manner. We spend at least 25% of our waking time with aspects of diet and eating: and to consider that we are not affected by what we eat is negligent. The first questions you should be asked by the medical profession need to concern your diet.
2. The food today is mainly unhealthy and on the whole has added ingredients, which cause illness or decrease resistance to disease promoting factors. Organic and preservative free foods are available but the rip off mentality overprices products that are cheaper to produce and the price needs to follow suit.
Experiments in New Delhi now show that the effect of cumin in modulating the effect of carcinogens had positive results in both stomach and uterine cancers.
Traditional use of spices as food preservatives, disinfectants and antiseptics based on the properties of the different spices is an effective kitchen practice.
Cumin is also effective to treat against certain bacteria.
Escherichia coli can cause intestinal and urinary system dis ease.

SLEEP AND SLEEP DISORDERS PART 1
If we have an average of 6 hours sleep and live an average of 70 years.. we spend 25% of our lifetime in a state of what we call sleep. That is we spend 17.5 years just sleeping.
Clearly any sleep disorder will have an effect on our pattern of health.
Sleep is the state of natural unconsciousness, during which the Brain's activity is not apparent (except for the continued maintenance of basic bodily functions by the sympathetic nervous system). .
Cycles Of Sleep.
During sleep there are a number of stages in which the brain waves and body mechanism undergo temporary changes.
Generally the first hour and half of sleep is the relaxation stage leading to deep sleep. The brain wave during deep sleep is called delta wave (Slow-Wave Sleep).
After about an hour of deep sleep the next stage is REM sleep for about 20 minutes. The brain wave during REM sleep is called theta.
Then there is a dip to beta waves for about 30 mins.-- This cycle of Sleep is when most people are likely to grind their teeth, walk, or talk in their Sleep.
Thereafter the sleep moves between Slow-Wave Sleep (delta wave) and REM (theta waves) till awakening.
The most beneficial stages of Sleep are REM sleep and Slow-Wave Sleep. These stages are known as Priority Sleep.
Slow-Wave Sleep stages are the most beneficial cycle of sleep and varies between 70- 90 minutes of total sleep.
Biological Function of Sleep
A Growth Hormone (hGH) is secreted into the bloodstream by the anterior lobe of the Pineal Gland during Sleep and cells repair themselves. (specifically during Slow-Wave Sleep).Deprived of slow wave sleep results in awakening with stiffness and muscle pain.
Melatonin is secreted into the bloodstream by the Pineal Gland during Sleep. Melatonin is A super important hormone which multi tasks in all systems. Functions from sexual potency to cancer prevention—a subject on its own.
Testosterone production and release occurs during Sleep and Sleep deprivation leads to lower serum levels of Testosterone. Another really important hormone.
Hair growth occurs during Sleep.So spend a bit more time sleeping when you find lots of hair blocking your shower outlet.
Optimal quantities of Sleep enhance the function of the Immune System.
Optimal quantities of Sleep are required for the optimal function of NK Lymphocytes (Natural Killer Cells):
During the rem stage there is Increased blood circulation to the Brain. Breathing quickens while Blood Pressure and Heartbeat rate increase. Men experience Erections. Dreaming occurs during this phase.
