STREETWISE
WEEDS THAT HEAL

STINGING NETTLE
BRANDNETEL
Urtica Dioica and Urtica urens
are the main members and have similar properties.
stem with hairs
THE HAIRS ARE QUITE VISIBLE ON THE STEM AND LEAVES

Nettle is really one of the greats of the herbal kingdom
If you had serious Arthritis and your friend came with a bunch of stinging nettle and started hitting you on your arthritic spots you would not scream for a psychiatrist—the formic acid and histamine in the hairs cause the burning and is a well used traditional method of treating arthritis as long as you hit the spot. If you are sensitive and not into sado masochism you could make a tea ----1 teaspoon to 1 cup boiling water or a small bunch of fresh leaves in boiling water.

If you dont want to get stung when working with nettle you can either grasp it tightly when holding it --it does not sting that way. The simplest is to use a glove, sock or a piece of newspaper.
Cups of nettle tea may have a relieving action on mild allergies -a cup of tea; not hitting your grandmother on the nose for nasal drip. You need to drink a cuppa every 4 hours----since nettle is also a good diuretic (probably due to its high potassium content), be sure you are close to a toilet.

The German institute for Drugs and Medical products have advised nettle for treatment and prevention of kidney stones.Really good to know because passing kidney stones is really painful.

One of he great thinkers of our time, Rudolph Steiner called the Nettle plant 'Heart of the World' because it radiated healing energy to people and the plants around it.
Nettle is an alterative, which means it affects all systems due to its ability to gradually alter or change a condition and restore normal function, tone and capacity and it detoxes.
With colds. coughs and bronchitis, it soothes the inflammation of the mucous membranes.

The nettle family consists of mainly 2 varieties, the perennial Urtica dioca and Urtica urens, an annual, which comes up about winter time and is quickly weeded out of the garden. If you are not going to drink it or add it to soups then put it into the compost pile—it is so good at helping to break down the heap. if you just scatter it amongst the plants, it will decompose putting its essence into the ground
Both Urtica and Dioica have similar medical uses and are safe at all times including during pregnancy and lactation, and has no side effects apart from the sting which may last a long time. Get rid of the sting by rubbing a leaf of nettle on the itch or rub on the fleshy part of a nearby cactus type plant : usually gives relief immediately.

Usually taken as a tea, it alleviates anaemia and stimulates the blood circulation. With all herbal teas it is usual to strain the mixture before drinking.

For you young men with prostate troubles the root of the nettle is a great friend----boil a few roots in water and take a dop twice a day.
Also taken as a tea it is a mild laxative.

A good way to make a mixture for external use is to make a tea by pouring boiling water on 2 teaspoons of dried nettle or a nice handful of fresh herb and strain then keep it refrigerated.
Use the infusion as a shampoo, conditioner and hair rinse for dandruff. Rub into the hair and scalp.
Stimulation of hair growth and prevention of hair loss also as a rub.
The same mixture can be used as a Cleanser for oily skin.

Black clouds are looming in the distance—the big boys—here I refer to those with the biggest greed have become aware that herbs, vitamins and minerals are big bucks business, really big bucks, so they have pushed their puppets –(some say the puppets of the multi corporations are the World Health Organisation, the FDA which “monitors” the American drug scene and other highly placed decision making bodies)—to look at classifying these natural healers into drugs available by prescription only—yup, so sick has the business world become. - A nettle enema would work wonders on some CEOS and
also lots of politicians.

When you want to avoid the doctor, herbs are great preventative medicine and that is what eating is about…. "food is your best medicine" and we are not referring to condensed milk, MSG, Aromat, processed cheese, genetically modified food that may taste good but it ends there.

Guidance with professional health practitioners from the naturopath, sangoma, dietician, alternative healer to a MD is an responsible course of action when dealing with any substance affecting your health.

DOUBLE THE AMOUNT WHEN USING FRESH HERB.

In the next newsletter we will deal with the herb Sage in the series called kitchen-wise:-talking about the medicinal value of the usual herbs found in the kitchen

RECIPE FOR KIDNEY RELATED DIS EASE

Each one of these herbs on its own will positively affect KIDNEY ailments and blended together they are a powerful mixture.

2x NETTLE
1x BUCHU
2x RUE
1x DANDELION
1x WILD SAGE {BLOUBLOMSALIE}

The Kidneys with their many filters work with the rest of the organs to maintain the wellbeing of the body. If it does not function well, your heart and circulation will show symptoms too.Edema is one of the well known indications of the bad functioning of both heart and kidney.

So the kidneys need their nourishment and enjoy parsley, celery and garlic. Radish too. Its the kind of food that makes you feel stronger. The parsley and celery can also be made as a tea or added to the usual large raw salad of at least one of the following; carrots, onions, lettuce , turnips, radishes, cucumber, celery , parsley, spinach , tomatoes , sprouts. It is healthier to use fresh lemon juice as a dressing

Flush the kidneys? My teacher used to say that when a washing machine was blocked, you never throw more water in to unblock it.
The balance of milder diuretics and anti inflammatory herbs such as dandelion and nettle complements the strong diuretic actions of buchu and rue.
The nettle and dandelion also replace many minerals and vitamins lost.

The herbs in this mixture are obtainable at any good health shop or pharmacy.
We do a ready made mixture, which is obtainable from our outlets called KIDNEYTEA. It is available in teabags or loose.

The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.

We are also a mail order source for our own organic teas , singles and  herbal products. Working with you, we can develop custom formulations specific to your practice. Our goal is long term working relationships that evolve over time.

If you have a problem getting the herbs contact us at <<herbs@herbsorganic.co.za>> and we will do our best to help you find them.
