GINGKO BILOBA

Maidenhair Tree

The ginko biloba tree is indigenous to China and together with the I Ching, Tao Te Ching Chinese herbal medicine and Chinese kung fu is likely one of the handful of worthwhile things coming from China.

With the ancients’ focus on the immortals and The elixir of immortality, this Chinese herb has also come into huge popularity due to its affect on aging.
Certain age promoting factors are inhibited by ginkgo—cellular metabolism is changed, blood circulation to the brain is improved. Free radicals are diminished with the improved oxygen supply to the brain.
The neurotransmitters at the nerve endings, which degrade with age, are replenished with this herb whose leaves look like a brain in section.

The doctrine of signatures is an ancient technique of identifying the function of a plant including colour, shape, environment, taste and smell as to the possible use of he herbs.
Neurotransmitters can be likened to a channel that nerve impulses pass through and they become clogged with age—ginkgo greases and cleans the channels allowing nerve impulses to flow –this will increase motor activity, decrease anxiety, open consciousness to a growing awareness.

Ginkgo is not a psychedelic and acts on the cell metabolism (intra Mitochondrial DNA) to achieve its waking up effect.
These factors can result in repair to nerves hence its use in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson

Ginkgolide-B is a kind of lipid (fat) substance in ginkgo that may increase blood circulation to the brain may prevent allergies, and prevent nerve damage hence its multitasking leads to helping the immune system.
Like most herbs the effect depends on the individual sensitivity, the preparation of the herb and the length of time before an effect is noticed.
The dry leaves do not have any effect; an extract or specially prepared formulations have the desired effect
A home extract would be to add 500ml of alcohol to 150mg of dried herb and leave for a month in a cool dark place then 1 to three teaspoons per day.

The research, which is abundant, shows extraordinary results over a time period-dis-ease including chronic schizophrenia, alertness, concentration, sleep and memory have shown definite improvement. Research indicates action on the blood supply and the nerve ending transmitters.

Ginkgo as an anti inflammatory and analgesic has been demonstrated to be as effective as some standard allopathic anti inflammatories.
Ginkgo has improved moods and alleviated depression after 2-4 week experiments; so much so that the German herbal authority advocated ginkgo as mood altering resulting in improvement in optimism and motivation especially in the elderly.
It’s the kind of mood elevator that replaces that anxiety which comes from observing the political drivel that comes from government, corporates and well meaning lost souls who want to save the world and cannot pay their electricity bill.

A hormone called platelet activating factor is produced by the adrenals and an excess of this hormone has many toxic effects --- partly involved in conditions resulting in respiratory, cardiovascular, immune systems and muscular symptoms--ginkgolide b factor in ginkgo inhibits this hormone so may be useful in some cases of asthma and bronchiospasm.

So if you are an alte kake or yente taking anti depressants because the rand is going to hell and the post office is run by a bunch of nudniks, you may have a problem getting an erection or even bothering about it-----the selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (fancy name for some anti depressants which have that effect) may find their match in ginkgo the Chinese tree that may have something to do with why the Chinese cut their birth-rate. Gingko has definite uses for sexual impotence and enhancing sexual desire. For males improving sexual performance and for females aiding in PMS.

Tinnitus can be described as the perception of sound in the absence of external auditory stimulation.
Ginkgo improves the blood flow and oxygen to the whole ear and in some cases depending on the cause may have a beneficial effect also having a positive effect on some hearing problems.

Fibrinogen is a blood-clotting factor that bodes no good for heart disease---ginkgo may inhibit platelet formation thus controlling the formation of thrombosis so like a blood thinner may work for preventing and alleviating heart attack risks.
Ischaemia is the decrease of blood flow to an area, oxygen flow is decreased by occlusion or narrowing of the arteries as happens in strokes and in some cases especially acute strokes ginkgo may be beneficial by increasing the blood flow, oxygenation and It lowers the potential for clotting. so in the cardio vascular system it enhances blood flow and lowers high blood pressure.

Polyphenols are a group of micronutrients found in plants—gingko contains a range that works on bones and muscles. Ginkgetin from Ginkgo biloba reduced arthritic inflammation. Quercitin may benefit osteoporosis; muscular aches and pains often disappear.
None of this is miraculous, its beyond the drama of Homo sapiens and comes from an evolved plant race that has been around long before mankind evolved or was mutated. Not to say that extra or ultra terrestrials planted herbs; yet Gaia (our earth) has a soul connected to the expanding cosmos and it is appropriate to treat mother earth with respect and not throw your plastic trash out of your car window. To hold the planet in awe is to open to the worship of transcendental forces.

ATP, (Adenosine Triphosphate) is produced in the cellular factories (Mitochondria) and is the fuel for the mental and physical bodily functions and is enhanced by Gingko.
If the body had a Reserve bank, the gold would be the balanced production of ATP. We need to be grateful that politicians cannot get hold of it.
Imagine, government is so incapable of running a business and yet irrespective of the track record of their companies including SAA, SABC, Telkom, Eskom not to mention departments, continue to poke their disruptive ideology into the structures that are keeping the country going. We need to pray that politicians confine themselves to corruption and improve their pathetic attempt to ensure the security and well being of the people. That they do not do their jobs may be due to the lack of our prayers or maybe a bunch of control freaks out of their depth.

Among its other uses, digestive disorders including colitis, gastric and duodenal ulcers may benefit.
The anti oxidant effect may help with eye problems such as damage to the retina and age related macula degeneration. Increase in blood circulation to the eye may help with cataracts and some damage to the optic nerve.

Increasing the blood circulation to the hair follicles may prevent male pattern baldness which is the common form creating a m shaped hair formation---so men with their crops starting to look bare may boost their vanity after a course of gingko.

Mature trees produce nuts which when consumed in small quantities may ease asthma, bronchitis and urinary tract ailments. The nuts are high in copper and iron.the nuts do not have food supplement status.
Large quantities are toxic and may lead to death.

When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing. Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.

The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.

Guidance with professional health practitioners from the naturopath, sangoma, dietician, alternative healer to a MD is an responsible course of action when dealing with any substance affecting your health.

Adrenals-A very short overview

The Adrenal Glands are the two triangular Endocrine Ductless Glands situated on top of the Kidneys.
Consist of an inner medulla and an outer cortex, which secrete different hormones.
The adrenals have been linked with the first chakra of Vedic writings.

The Adrenal Glands are controlled by the Pituitary Gland.
ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is released from the Pituitary Gland in response to Stress.
The adrenals release adrenaline from the adrenal medulla by the biofeedback mechanism.
Adrenaline fortifies the flight or fight reaction with enhancing effects on the cardiovascular and metabolism

Cholesterol is partly stored in the adrenals and the conversion to steroids tales place in the adrenal cortex, which regulates metabolism and maintains normal electrolyte balance.

Cortisol helps the body to cope with stress
Progesterone has multiple functions on the blood system to prevent heart and cardiovascular ailments and is really important in the female sexual system
Aldosterone regulates blood pressure and salt balance in the body.
Testosterone is important in male sexual function.
Estrogens help to prepare the female body for pregnancy.

The following herbs usually in combination by a herbalist may improve adrenal function.
licorice
gingko biloba
ashwagandha
ginseng
astragalus
