and aspects of the herbal industry that affect the person in the street.

CONTENTS OF NEWSLETTER NO 52 Celandine and thyroid and parathyroid

• Street-wise----Medicinal herbs growing wild and recognised as weeds in the streets, garden and the wild.(includes the oceans)
•Thyroid and Parathyroid.

GREATER CELANDINE
CHELIDONIUM

What we have done in the west through our complacency is to allow a 250-year-old group of people (USA) to influence the way we live a big chunk of our lives------fast food chains and supermarkets dominate our eating and shopping tendencies.

The junk foods affect the liver and when the liver is right you are merry and bright and when the liver is low you feel sluggish and slow—how’s life? It all depends on the liver

Influencing our eating habits is the current business protocol that displays food guaranteed to aggravate any liver condition at key points. Probably supermarket chains commit crimes against humanity and are immune from prosecution. Name me a supermarket that does not aggressively display junk foods at the paying counter-----money over health is the order of the day and all supermarkets including food and health chains are probably responsible for so many illnesses.

The anti oxidant and Chelidonic Acid in Celandine may alleviate some liver toxicity and protects liver cells from damage but that needs to be done in conjunction with medical guidance as the wrong dosage may cause liver damage.

Preliminary research suggests greater celandine might increase the flow of bile when taken as a tincture, It is used for normalizing the activity of the gall bladder—it should not be taken in cases of excessive bile production. It has been used widely in Europe for relieving gallstones

Not surprising that the diseases of the digestive system are so common —constipation, upset tummy, loss of appetite, gastroenteritis, stomach cancer and irritable bowel syndrome. Experiments have indicated greater celandine useful in alleviating indigestion, cramping and nausea. The herb prompts the body to release more digestive enzymes, which helps improve overall digestion.

Greater Celandine herbal extract has been used to ease inflammation of the gout, arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, rheumatism and scrofulous diseases. Scientific research indicates that the herb's orange-yellow sap contains alkaloids that combat viruses, bacteria and fungi
The anti inflammatory effects of Celandine have been well researched in Korea and have been beneficial in alleviating Rheumatoid Arthritis using a standardized extract.

Stylopine is the constituent of the leaf that has the anti inflammatory property that effects the liver and also eliminates warts. Should you have a wart on your nose or a skin defect, the orange juice of celandine applied directly has in most cases killed or disappeared warts and other skin malformations thanks to its anti viral properties.Rumour has it that a drop of celandine juice on the skin of a politician may disappear that chronic illness politicianitis as outlined by lao tzu in the tao te ching

Research indicates that celandine is beneficial in most cancers Mainly due to its alkaloid content, treatment with Celandine showed some success in treating several types and sites of cancer, including breast, cervical, colorectal, esophageal, ovarian, testicular and urethral cancers; malignant melanoma, optic nerve astrocytoma and Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with AIDS.

Cancer is a grey area- usually only those scientists who are subsidized by big chemical firms get their so called research into the creditable journals—its big business with no real results so far. Maybe doctors are too quick to diagnose minor issues as potential cancers resulting in costly procedures.
In the right hands herbs are likely to be as beneficial, less intrusive and without any of the side effects of chemotherapy.

The herb celandine has a long history of use for eyesight problems, this holds good for defective vision and is a prophylactic for healthy but strained eyes. Greater Celandine herbal extract is used topically for eye inflammations and cataracts and spots on the cornea may disappear gradually when the diluted extract is brushed gently over closed eyelids towards the corners. The dilution may even help in cases of a bleeding or detached retina.
I think that it is safe to say that our current direction as a global society needs to change— So many distractions exist to avoid finding out who we are – how many can be satisfied until answering the question who am i…the most daunting task.

.
Celandine has been used to lower blood pressure and may also be used as a mild diuretic. Celandine produces mild but prolonged lowering of arterial blood pressure, increases the production of urine and inhibits or delays the development of anaphylactic shock.
Greater celandine is not to be used by nursing or pregnant women or children with liver disease and always under guidance of a proficient professional.

When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing. Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.

The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.

Guidance with professional health practitioners from the naturopath, sangoma, dietician, alternative healer to a MD is an responsible course of action when dealing with any substance affecting your health.

IN MOST CASES WE REFER TO DRIED HERB WHEN ADVOCATING AMOUNTS IN TEASPOON FOR TEAS .

DOUBLE THE AMOUNT WHEN USING FRESH HERB.

These herb properties are directly connected to and derived from the forces of nature - if you want to call it Godhead, Greater hierarchy, Krishna, Yaveh, Allah, it does not matter—these are the forces that we can trust today. So treat the herbs with the respect due to a great natural force, never mind the ravings of a semi lunatic political, media force doing their best to undermine common sense.
Prevention is better than cure.

In the next newsletter we will write about bobbamisis in the series called Kitchenwise - talking about medicinal properties of the usual herbs and food found in the kitchen.

THE THYROID AND PARATHYROIDS- a short overview

The Thyroid is the endocrine gland located in the front of the neck and has 2 lobes –one on either side of the larynx.

The endocrine gland secretes hormones that affect the Throat — Bronchial tubes, vocal cords, respiratory system, all areas of the mouth, including tongue and esophagus.

The Thyroid secretes hormones that control your metabolism, so a sluggish thyroid (hypothyroidism) will make it hard for you to lose weight, maintain energy, warm your hands and feet, or even stay in a positive mood. A hyperactive thyroid also causes severe metabolic and immune system problems and may manifest as a goiter (enlarged mass in the neck).

Foods nourishing to the thyroid gland include blueberries, blackberries, grapes and cherries. Soups, especially those containing vitamin-and mineral- and fiber-containing vegetables, will be especially soothing to the throat. Seaweeds, like kelp or kombu, contain iodine to support thyroid function and have a demulcent action on the throat.

Kelp stimulated the production of thyroid hormone due to iodine.

Dairy products and sugar can clog your throat and wreak havoc with your blood sugar as well, so are best avoided. Drink plenty of water, especially first thing in the morning to cleanse your system. Try the herbal sugar substitute Stevia and herbal teas.
The thyroid produces and secretes thyroid hormones Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine.
These hormones prevent cardio vascular disease, stimulate the immune system and regulate the energetic levels of the body/
Certain hassles of the nervous system such as Altsheimers, Depression and Memory function come into effect when the levels of thyroid hormones are not effective.
Calcitonin is produced by both the thyroid and Parathyroids and regulate calcium, metabolism
Ashwagandha herb stimulates the production of Thyroxine and may be very beneficial in hypothyroidism.

The PARATHYROID

The Parathyroids are 4 to 6 rice size glands situated behind or inside the thyroid The parathyroid produce a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH raises the blood calcium level by:
1. Breaking down the bone (where most of the body's calcium is stored) and causing calcium release
2. Increasing the body's ability to absorb calcium from food
3. Increasing the kidney's ability to hold on to calcium that would otherwise be lost in the urine.
Normal parathyroid glands work like the thermostat in your home to keep blood calcium levels in a very tightly controlled range. When the blood calcium level is too low, PTH is released to bring the calcium level back up to normal. When the calcium level is normal or gets a little too high, normal parathyroids will stop releasing PTH. Proper calcium balance is crucial to the normal functioning of the heart, nervous system, kidneys, and bones.

In the Indian chakra discipline, which deals with enhancing energy levels both the thyroid and parathyroid, are associated with the 5th chakra.
