SING FEFUR NEWSLETTER NO 54
An overview of different herbal realities focusing on the medicinal value of plants, indigenous herbs of South Africa
and aspects of the herbal industry that affect the person in the street.
Since time does not allow most of us to read long newsletters, this newsletter will only deal with one herb at a time starting with the series kitchenwise and streetwise.

Oh yes! in case you are breathing a sigh of relief-don't--I will continue with the newsletter.
The use of horsetail for hair conditioning and repair is not an old wives tale. Some commercial hair conditioners have the extract added.
For dandruff, hair loss and split ends, drinking the tea or using the extract or tincture has been shown to be beneficial as long as the hair follicles are alive.
pehaps some of our polititians would benefit from horsetail rather than grease.
So massaging a few drops of horsetail extract or tincture mixed in two tablespoons of extra virgin olive or coconut oil for 10 minutes a few times a week may strengthen the follicles so as to increase the ability to grow hair especially after chemotherapy.
Adding a few drops to the shampoo when washing hair is also beneficial
Studies done indicate that the especially high content of silicates are responsible for the hair benefits and the benefits on the musculo skeletal system.
Horsetail evolved over the last 300 to 500 million years to become a commercial component of dietary supplements due to its high mineral nutrient content.
Consider a plant specie with ancestors that had been around for 500 million years—how much knowledge it must have gleaned to survive and in so doing, like most herbs/plants provide many beneficial properties for mans’ survival as well. Contra that against manufactured medication that has been around for 200years and is the basis for big business -healing is not the prime objective.
Modern man has been around about 200 000 years and has managed to bring itself to live under the sword of Damocles bordering on self-destruction and thriving on competition and war.
Mounting evidence supports the role of silicon in bone formation and together with Vitamin D and calcium has much potential for osteoporosis treatment. The plants’ actions in healing bones and strengthening connective tissue are attributed to silicic acid since the herb has a very high percentage of silica; between 5 -10%.
Although research confirms that silicates increase bone density and growth, it is not quite clear how it works—one theory is that the DNA of the bone forming cells are stimulated.
The form of silicon found in most veg and herbs is not easily absorbed into the body— orthosilicic acid is the form of silicon that is highly bioavailable and absorbable
Orthosilicic acid is found naturally in seawater, drinking water, and beer. We also get silicon naturally from some foods like oats, barley, green beans, bananas and polished rice.
The research into horsetail has been sparse and some researchers have postulated that the naturally occurring acids in the plant convert the silica in horsetail to its bioavailable form thus enabling the absorption of the silica into the blood stream.
With the norm today being insanity and with manipulated distraction the order of the day—we as specie have still to prove our courage by facing a next step in our evolution toward becoming less of a stick person jerking (jerks) under the rules set by a unbelievably stupid governing system dependent on the banking system, to being responsible cosmic citizens.
Maybe we will wipe ourselves out before then or even be wiped out due to our collective immaturity.
“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. ”Albert Einstein
Herbalist suggest 1 teaspoon of dried herb to a cup water for a days drinking supply.Horsetails’ actions in healing bones and strengthening connective tissue are attributed to silicic acid since the herb has a very high percentage of silica between 5 -10%.
In Europe horsetail is officially used for the kidney and bladder infusions.
Its diuretic action is attributed to the flavonoid and saponin contents. Taken internally, It is prescribed for kidney stones and painful urination----the use for kidney stones has not had enough research but would likely be effective taken in moderation with Buchu, radish and parsnip.
In the USA because of its high micronutrient content, it is used in dietary supplement products either in tablet or fluid form.
The movement toward urbanization is creating a society dependent on the rules of the urban system----chlorine and fluoride in the water, food from systems that promote the use of antibiotics and pesticides in the food chain, intrusive medical and political practices.
The alternatives of organics are abused and expensive and not affordable for most.
‘If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.’ Lao Tzu
When a scratch has a bit of blood seeping out, it is very rarely going to result in the person using horsetail or any herb as a styptic to stop the bleeding or even to heal the wound----
An antibiotic cream is used and the simple herbal remedy has very little place in the house unless it is something well known by being advertised and promoted by media, the product usually being overrated.
The end result is a mass of people making their own mixtures based on what herbs the media promote that may cure their ailment—not a bad thing but it may become abused.
The sedative and anti convulsive effects of horsetail have proved protective and beneficial in experiments. A hydroalcoholic extract is used and may be obtained commercially.
According to the European Commission, horsetail is safe during and after pregnancy and has no known side effects. but if you feel unsure leave it.
When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing. Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.
The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.
Guidance with professional health practitioners from the naturopath, sangoma, dietician, alternative healer to a MD is an responsible course of action when dealing with any substance affecting your health.

THE PITUITARY GLAND
The pituitary is a pea-sized gland divided into an anterior and posterior lobe. The anterior lobe is glandular tissue, which produces and releases hormones. The posterior lobe (nerve tissue)is an extension of the hypothalamus— The posterior lobe does not produce hormones per se this is done by nerve cells in the hypothalamus-the hormones are stored in the pituitary and when needed released into the circulation.
Its working depends largely on a bio feedback system linked to the hypothalamus via the blood stream. The pituitary gland is often dubbed the “master gland” because its hormones regulate the functions of other glands Through production of its hormones, the pituitary gland controls metabolism, growth, sexual maturation, human reproduction, blood pressure and many other vital physical functions and processes.
Hormones of the Pituitary Gland
Anterior Lobe Hormones:
• Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH):
ACTH stimulates the adrenal glands to produce steroid hormones in times of stress
• Growth hormone (GH): GH is essential in early years to maintaining a healthy body composition and for growth in children. In adults, it aids healthy bone and muscle mass and affects fat distribution. It may play a part in life extension potential.
GH is used in crohns disease to reduce pain and treatment with aids.
• Luteinizing Hormone and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) are also known as gonadotropins. They act on the ovaries or testes to stimulate sex hormone production, and egg and sperm maturity i.e. Estrogens in ovaries (in women) and testosterone in the testes (in men). FSH is illicitly used by bodybuilders to induce muscle growth.
Ginseng and sweet potato stimulate the relase of FSH from the pituitary.
• Prolactin: Prolactin stimulates breast milk production.
• Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to produce hormones.
• MSH Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone stimulates melatonin production and distribution to the skin inceasing pigment and creating racial tension throughout the world.
The posterior lobe contains the ends of nerve cells coming from the Hypothalamus. The Hypothalamus sends hormones directly to the posterior lobe where they are stored, and then the pituitary gland releases them.
Posterior Lobe Hormones:
Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) aka Vasopressin:
This hormone prompts the kidneys to increase water absorption in the blood controlling water balance and blood pressure. The beneficial effects on the nervous system including treatment for insomnia, memory loss, anxiety, confusion lack of intelligence and hallucinations Now who would that be perfect for if not for decision makers in government and banking!
• Oxytocin: Oxytocin is involved in a variety of processes, such as contracting the uterus during childbirth and stimulating breast milk production. Oxytocin is released into the blood at the time of orgasm resulting in the relaxation that occurs following orgasm. Oxytocin may be useful in many kinds of dependence and repetitive
behavior. So if you continually vote for a political party even if they are corrupt, nepotic and really just not accountable, which results is corrosion of the social fabric of the country, you may need oxytocin.
The ideas reflected in these newsletters are based on and depend on free speech being still available in South Africa.
