SING FEFUR NEWSLETTER NO 42
An overview of different herbal realities focusing on the medicinal value of plants, indigenous herbs of South Africa
and aspects of the herbal industry that affect the person in the street.
Since time does not allow most of us to read long newsletters, this newsletter will only deal with one herb at a time starting with the series kitchenwise and streetwise.
CONTENTS OF NEWSLETTER NO 42 February 2015
· Street-wise----Medicinal herbs growing wild and recognised as weeds in the streets, garden and the wild.
· Home treatments of Skin Cancers
Ancient civilizations such as the Indian and Arabians used Calendula as an anti-inflammatory agent
to treat minor skin wound and infections, burns, bee stings, sunburn and cancer.
The flowers and petals of the traditional orange pot marigold are used, the many hybrid varieties
do not have any beneficent properties.
With regular use, the cream may help with varicose veins and haemorrhoids.
By the time a herbal treatment reaches the large intestine, it may have lost potency because it is a
long and winding road along the gastro intestinal tract. Not so calendula.
Like a gentle embracing mantra calendula penetrates and soothes the pain of colitis. Used as a tincture or tea it performs its magic.
The colour of the evening sun that is tranquil and healing imbues the marigold with the touch of healing.
"When the liver is right you feel merry and bright,
When the liver is low you feel sluggish and slow.
How's life! It all depends on the liver."
Flatulence is here today, due to rubbish eaten yesterday. That, due to insufficient bile flow is
helped by the calendulas action of increasing the bile flow. Calendula tea will also help with
the treatment of gall bladder dysfunctions.
Dosages should be moderate as large dosages may negatively affect the liver causing biliousness
Topical eye ailments such as bloodshot eyes, conjunctivitis and sties can be treated with a filtered
infusion of calendula petals as an eyewash.
Most herbalists recommend between 3 grams and 12 grams of dried Calendula flowers as a tea per day
for therapeutic purposes.
I suspect the beauty business world is so busy with complicated public relations and expensive
formulas or rather cheap formula that sell at exorbitant prices due to elaborate packaging, that real
concern for skin treatment is relegated to "don't want to know"
Skin deep is big competitive business and PR sells the notion that expensive is better.
Calendula creams, lotions and ointments are used for skin treatments. A huge arena of skin dis orders
are covered very successfully including Acne, Psoriasis, Bruising, Bed Sores, Blisters, Ulcers, Shingles,
Itching, Corns, Dermatitis and Skin damage caused by Radiation especially breast cancer.
Calendula ointment is especially good in cases of long-term Eczema.
The triterpenoids Hellionol and Faradiol are the active ingredients in the healing of Burn wounds.
Woman friendly herbs abound and marigold is a trusted aid.
Ancients used a cold infusion of petals for alleviating Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).
After Cesarean section especially, a tea 3 x per day accelerates the post pregnancy healing process.
As a cold douche an infusion may help with inflamed Uterus and Vaginitis (especially when
Vaginitis is caused by Gardnerella vaginalis or Trichomonas vaginalis) .
Politicians would likely benefit from Calendula---the effect of chronic insincere speeches and untruths
may give rise to gingivitis, mouth ulcers and inflammation of the lips (note how many of our
politicians have the sly dik lip syndrome).
Calendula as a mouth wash alleviates the inflammation associated with gingivitis.
Cream applied locally would help with healing mouth ulcers and inflammation of the lips.
When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing. Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.
The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.
Guidance with professional health practitioners from the naturopath, sangoma, dietician, alternative healer to a MD is an responsible course of action when dealing with any substance affecting your health.

HOME TREATMENT OF SKIN PROBLEMS AND CANCERS PART 3
The use of cannabis for medicinal and recreational use has been ongoing for thousands of years.
The main active ingredient of cannabis plants - delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - was discovered in the 60s.
THC is psychoactive. So far, the best results in the lab or animal models for cancer treatment have come from
using a combination of highly purified THC and cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants that
counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC .
The Cannabinoids attach to receptor cells in the immune and the nervous system.
The effects of Cannabinoids are widespread
· Triggering cell death, through a mechanism called apoptosis
· Stopping cells from dividing
· Preventing new blood vessels from growing into tumours. Lab reports indicate that Cannabinoids may
close off blood vessels to the injury¬-this may also be a good thing as it prevents blood f;low to the lesion
· Reducing the chances of cancer cells spreading through the body, by stopping cells from moving or
invading neighbouring tissue
· Speeding up the cell's internal 'waste disposal machine' - a process known as autophagy - which can lead
to cell death.
According to serious researchers there is a lack of solid evidence that the claims made by people peddling
these treatments are true. This may be due to their reputations and the lack of clinical evidence which gives
the credibility to a researcher.
And yet more research suggests that combining cannabinoids with other chemotherapy drugs may be a much
more effective approach.
In order to standardize the dose, researchers are investigating other delivery methods such as tablets, oil
injections, mouth sprays or even microspheres.
The hemp oil or hash oil sold via the internet may not be standardize but many cures have been effective
by applying the oil to skin lesions directly or mixing with bicarb.
Sources in South Africa are rare and hard to come by as it is regarded as an illegal drug.
Excessive exposure to sunlight may result in free radicals, which affect the
DNA of the skin—only a minor spectrum of the UV light is active in this process.
To point in an organic simple home teatment is the aim here and to do further reseach is encouraged as
the skin cancers return and often only start later in life.
The treatment may only show results after long time periods although the process of healing can be clearly
seen during the process and lends endurance to continuing.
Dietary changes, which are not radical, may prevent the tumour promoting effect.
Foods such as beetroot garlic and onions are most effective.
Many herbs including Ashwagandha, Milk Thistle and Hops prevent skin cancer.
Rosemary as a tea is a powerful anti skin cancer agent.
Tea tree applied topically may facilitate regression.
Research in Turkey has shown clearly that Oleander leaf poultices help with skin cancers.
Preferably use organic oleander leaf.
To make your own application-
Handful of the following herbs
Oleander leaf, Comfrey leaf, Cancer bush leaf, Aloe (if possible Vera), Calendula flowers,
Rosemary leaf and Nettle leaf.
Fill the jar to half—you may have to warm the oil to make it liquid.
Chop the herbs as fine as possible and add to the oil.
Put out in the sun and leave for a month shaking the bottle regularly. Cover the jar with a tea cozy or beanie
You may have a problem getting all the leaves and a herbal nursery may be the place to collect.
