SING FEFUR NEWSLETTER NO 33

An overview of different herbal realities focusing on the medicinal value of plants, indigenous herbs of South Africa
and aspects of the herbal industry that affect the person in the street.
Since time does not allow most of us to read long newsletters, this newsletter will only deal with one herb at a time starting with the series kitchenwise and streetwise.

OREGANUM
ORIGANO
OREGANUM VULGARE

The pizza was not invented by the Chinese--that is a myth —Oreganum is the herb of choice for pizza and fittingly so as it alleviates indigestion and melted cheese is really not easily digestible and may even block absorption of nutrients.

Antioxidants find new meaning when you consider the very high potency of Rosmarinic acid, which is the constituent of many kitchen herbs including Rosemary, and Oreganum. This is an effective non-expensive way to obtain sufficient powerful antioxidants, which are really essential especially as one ages.

Antioxidants are a diverse group of otherwise unrelated chemicals that combine with Free Radicals.
A Free Radical is a molecule that has lost an Electron and is therefore "unpaired". The "unpaired" molecule "steals" the missing Electron from any nearby molecule leading to the creation of more Free Radicals and initiating a subsequent chain reaction.
Just as the free radicals in our society cause political and social upheaval so too the excess free radicals can cause much damage to the different organs of the body.

Ask someone what beauty means to him or her. Each will answer according to their level of perception.
Today beauty is still appreciated but honour has no place in our society. We have grown apart from the values such as compassion, empathy, caring that characterize human and natures’ values.
Our sharing is shallow and meaningless.

That has been part of the impetus to natural healing and living and it is such a driving force that we are again seeing the blossoming of alternative healing: the return of the hippie in disguise is happening, the path of heart strengthening, irrespective of the pressures from the corporations.

Research has verified the effective use of Oreganum in colon cancer both as preventative and during the condition.
Unlike thoughts by the elitists most people’s intestines have helicobacter bacteria, which is usually benign, and if it should happen that you have dysentery and intestinal bacterial infection and are alone in the kitchen—1 teaspoon of dried Oreganum in a cup of hot water will help.

An upgrade is Oregano oil, usually made from the herb by steam distillation. The potency and use of Oregano is much enhanced by using the oil either as a liquid capsule or in small bottles combined with olive oil.

For the skin, applied topically, oregano oil alleviates psoriasis, ringworm, eczema, abscesses, bruising stings and ulcers. Dilute the oil in a carrier such as coconut or olive oil.
The magic ingredients are Carvacrol and Thymol, both are potent anti bacterial and anti viral and also useful for herpes simplex (cold sores)
Both Thymol and Carvacrol are ingredients of mouthwash.

Taken orally Oregano oil aids Gastritis, Diarrhoea and Colitis--- mix the liquid with water 6 drops to a cup of water.

The possible use of the oil in combating detrimental bacteria especially those affecting the intestines and airways has been investigated. Oregano oil have been found to function well as an antibiotic and antiviral against certain bacteria including Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, Staphylococcus Streptococcus pneumoniae amongst others.

This may really sound way out but the research is positive and useful especially now with the increase in cases where the pathogens are resistant to antibiotics. Soon it will become mainstream news and the dangers evident.
Oregano oil is used as an effective treatment for candida albican yeast.—it may prevent and also kill the yeast..
It is as though nature has been watching the abuse of antibiotics patiently and has slotted in at this stage to supplement the standard healing process, which has relied so much on the medicines, which are now proving to be less effective than initially thought.
Maybe the hospitals both private and public would begin to work on this issue by firstly keeping their theaters sterile—I was in a private hospital today and was in a working theatre which was a disgrace —I can only think the top physicians who operate there have lost the plot. And if other theatres are like those at this very expensive fancy hospital, the archtype of the clean medical practises we imagine are a hype and the reality an abomination.

“For one who believeth, he may eat all things, another who is weak eateth herbs
Let not him that eateth despise him that has eateth not and let not him which eateth not judge him who eateth for God hath received him”
Does not this reference to faith also refer to all the various modalities of healing too, all of which require the basis of faith in the healing process?

When dealing with a breakdown in one aspect of the body health, it may be wise to treat the whole system rather than focus on a single organ or system. In this way mixtures of herbs may work more effectively than a single herb—some helping with elimination and detoxing. Our mixtures contain herbs, which do all that and fortify the mineral and vitamin supply hence providing a more complete healing process with no side effects.

The process of cutting a herb generates heat so the finer the cut of the herb so too does the potency diminish that little bit. So I recommend the rough tea cut rather than teabags even though it appears to be a mission to make in the rush rush everyday world.

IN MOST CASES WE REFER TO DRIED HERB WHEN ADVOCATING AMOUNTS IN TEASPOON FOR TEAS .

DOUBLE THE AMOUNT WHEN USING FRESH HERB.

These herb properties are directly connected to and derived from the forces of nature - if you want to call it Godhead, Greater hierarchy, Krishna, Yaveh, Allah, it does not matter—these are the forces that we can trust today. So treat the herbs with the respect due to a great natural force, never mind the ravings of a semi lunatic political, media force doing their best to undermine common sense.
Prevention is better than cure.

In the next newsletter we will deal with Vervain in the series called Streetwise - talking about medicinal properties of herbs found growing in the streets, garden and the wild.

DIAGNOSIS OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

How do you know you are not just a snorer and may have apnea?
Usually you will find out when your spouse, concubine or girlfriend is pale faced in the morning and said she thought you had died because you stopped breathing in your sleep.
Not good news so go the route---via self-diagnosis and then if necessary objective tests by a health professional.

One self-report test as an example of many is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and measures the severity of sleepiness from the following questions.
in answer to the question in the chart score
0 = Unlikely to fall asleep 1 = Slight risk of falling asleep 2 = Moderate risk of falling asleep 3 = High likelihood of falling asleep

The higher the score the higher the sleepiness.

Scoring:
0 to 9 = Average daytime sleepiness
10 to 15 = Excessive daytime sleepiness
16 to 24 = Moderate to severe daytime sleepiness

Primary snorers usually have a score less than 10

Individuals with moderate to severe sleep apnea usually have a score greater than 16.
If you think you may have apnea may be a good idea to see a medical professional.

What you can expect from the Medical archtype---ta raaa
The doctor will take History about:
Work performance,
Daytime sleepiness
Driving and accident history,
Napping,
Falling asleep during meetings, and
Decreased memory.

Physical examination to ascertain possible airway collapse. are performed only if an injury is suspected.
In the nose, this includes the septum, turbinates, nasal polyps, adenoid hypertrophy, and nasopharynx (back of the nose).
In the mouth, the palate, tonsils, uvula, pharyngeal walls, and neck circumference are all examined.

A flexible nasopharyngoscopy is usually performed to examine the airway during active breathing and simulated snoring maneuvers. (The nasopharyngoscope is a fiber-optic, flexible tube approximately 18 inches in length and an eighth of an inch in diameter with a camera on its end. The camera end is inserted through the nasal passage to the upper throat or pharynx where the actions of the tongue and palate can be observed.) And the stories of extraterrestrials experimenting on human are beginning to sound plausable.

Usually the doctor will not ask about your diet –that is because doctors don’t know much about nutrition even though it makes up a major percentage of out waking life and will effect to a marked degree our patterns of living.

Touted, as a fat persons condition, obstructive apnea may be rather a lazy persons condition as many skinny folk have it. Food is your best medicine and is put into the sideline: probably because when you look at the labels, most of the food in a supermarket is dangerous to eat and the large pharmaceuticals may have a drop in share prices if people ate healthily.

Ok so as soon as something becomes popular and lucrative, it springs up all over the place like poisonous mushrooms. So too has sleep become big business as most people do sleep. Hence the new fad of sleep clinic chains popping up, selling all sorts of sleep aids and offering equipment mostly poorly designed at exorbitant prices—once you get into their trap you are screwed. We will follow with the available conventional treatment and potential for self help exercises in the newsletters to come.

The next step is a sleep study.

SLEEP STUDY (Polysomnography)

This is the main test for apnea, which measures different physical and physiological parameters while a subject, is asleep. You can do this at a clinic or hire the equipment and do it at home.
A typical polysomnography test includes:
An electroencephalogram (EEG) monitors brain waves; It is helpful for determining if an event (respiratory or limb movement) disrupts the level of sleep. REM and deep sleep are the beneficial stages of sleep.
An electro-oculogram (EOG) monitors eye movements, During REM sleep (dreaming sleep), the eyes typically move from side-to-side. This measurement can help determine the duration of REM sleep.
An electromyogram (EMG) monitors muscle activity, during REM sleep all muscles relax. The EMG also helps to determine the duration of REM sleep.

Measurement of oral and nasal airflow, to help determine the size and frequency of breaths during sleep.
Measurement of chest and abdominal movement, can be used to distinguish between central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. (During central sleep apnea, the signal to take a breath is not given, so the muscles do not attempt to take a breath. During obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles attempt to take a breath, but no air moves.)
Audio recording of the loudness of snoring,
Blood oxygen levels (oximetry), and measure the decreases in oxygen in the blood during apneas and hypopneas
Video monitoring of the subject studies incidents during sleep. (Often a patient will not remember sleepwalking, sleep talking, levitation, past lives and walking through walls.}
After polysomnography is completed, a board certified sleep specialist analyzes the data.
The number of apneas, hypopneas, leg movements, and sleep levels are all recorded in a formal report, and a diagnosis is made.

Other tests for obstructive sleep apnea include the:
Multiple Sleep Latency Test measures how long it takes for a person to fall asleep in the day
Maintenance of Wakefulness Test also measures daytime sleepiness by tests to se how long a person can stay awake.
Severity levels in obstructive sleep apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea can be categorized as mild, moderate, or severe. some treatments that are excellent for mild sleep apnea nearly always will fail for severe sleep apnea.
The severity level is measured with polysomnography. In one grading scale using the apnea-hypopnea index, mild obstructive sleep apnea is 5 to 15 events per hour, moderate obstructive sleep apnea is 15 to 30 events per hour, and severe obstructive sleep apnea is more than 30 events per hour.
In the following newsletters we will follow with conventional and self help treatment ofr obstructive sleep apnea

Central Sleep Apnea
Central sleep apnea is much less common and found more in males over 65.
It may become more popular since it can also be a result of medication and today with medication being pushed out to maintain bottom line instead of health much more side effects are being seen.
it is a condition where the brain does not send a signal to breathe in response to the normal monitoring system which is the level of oxygen or carbon dioxide in the blood.
Often due to underlying illness such as heart disease, stroke, spinal injury, high altitude: here it is the underlying illness that is treated.
Infants may have central apnea, which they outgrow with the help of an alarm system.
Diagnosis of central apnea is by sleep study as well and some of the conventional treatments for obstructive sleep apnea are used.
