ADAPTOGEN Affects immune, endocrine, and nervous systems due to its ability to increase the body's capability to adapt to external and internal stress by strengthening those systems.

ALDOSTERONE SYNERGIST Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to enhance the effects or actions or aldosterone.

ALEXERITIC Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to be counteractive against infection, venom, and poison.

ALTERATIVE Affects all systems due to its ability to gradually alter or change a condition and restore normal function, tone and capacity. An alterative may be for a specific system such as "digestive alterative" or a specific tissue such as "cardiac alterative."

AMEBICIDE Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to cause the destruction of amebas.

ANABOLIC Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to promote tissue growth, especially the synthesis of proteins. Also able to affect endocrine system and hormone function as tissue growth is largely hormone regulated.

ANALGESIC Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to reduce or eliminate pain by acting on the sensory nervous system, either centrally or peripherally. Painful sensations are deadened but still perceived.

ANAPHRODISIAC Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to suppress, lessen or abolish sexual desire.

ANDROGENIC Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to act like an androgen and have a masculinizing effect. An androgen is a hormone such as testosterone, DHEA, or androsterone that controls the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics.

AROMATIC. Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the appetite and gastric secretion based on the action of the volatile oil or other aromatic principle. Aromatics are also used to relieve flatulence, open nasal passages, improve palatability of medicines or give a psychological boost.

AROMATIC BITTER Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the appetite and gastric secretion. Usually has both a volatile oil and bitter principles.

ASTRINGENT Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to cause contraction of tissues.

BACTERICIDE Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to destroy bacteria. May not necessarily kill their spores

BACTERIOSTATIC Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to inhibit or slow bacterial growth but does not kill bacteria.

BITTER Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the appetite. Bitters stimulate the secretion of saliva and gastric juice reflexively by exciting the taste buds. They are not effective if given directly into the stomach, as in the form of a pill.

BITTER TONIC Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the flow of saliva and gastric juice in order to increase the appetite and to aid the digestive system.

BLOOD COAGULANT Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to cause, stimulate or accelerate blood coagulation.

BLOOD PURIFIER Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to clean and purify the blood by promoting eliminative functions and the removal of waste matter.

DECONGESTANT Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to that reduce congestion, usually sinus congestion.

DEMULCENT Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to soothe and protect, or soften the tissue it is applied to.

DEOBSTRUENT Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to relieve or remove obstruction, removes an obstruction to flow esp. from the natural ducts of the body.

DEODORANT Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to absorb or destroy foul odors.

EMMENAGOGUE Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to promote or affects the flow of menstrual fluid. Emmenagogues are not to be used during pregnancy in order to avoid a harmful miscarriage.

EMOLLIENT Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to soften, soothe and protect the part of the body it is applied to.

ESTROGENIC ACTIVITY Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to act similar to an estrogen. Estrogens are used as a therapy for menstrual disorders, menopausal disorders and coronary disorders in women.

LYMPHAGOGUE Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to increases the formation and flow or lymph.

MALE TONIC Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to stimulate, restores and strengthens masculine characteristics.

MIND-ALTERING Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to produce mood changes or changes in perception.

MINERALOCORTICOID ACTIVITY Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to act like a mineralocorticoid and by help to regulate the balance of water and electrolytes in the body.

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITOR (MAOI). Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to act as an antidepressant that block the action of monoamine oxidase (which destroys monoamines) and allow the accumulation of norepinephrine and serotonin (monoamines). Since some cases of depression are caused by decreased activity of norepinephrine and serotonin, blocking the destruction of them helps treat depression.

MOTOR DEPRESSANT Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to depress the functions of the spinal cord, motor nerves and muscles.

NARCOTIC Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to depress the central nervous system, relieve pain and produce sleep in moderate doses. In large doses, it produces unconsciousness, stupor, coma and possibly death. Most narcotics are habit forming. In low doses it may soothe, relieve and calm.

NERVINE Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to soothe the nerves and alleviate irritation and stress.

NUTRITIVE Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to provide nutrients and promote nourishing.

OXYTOCIC Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to mimic the effect of oxytocin; a pituitary gland hormone which stimulates contraction of uterine muscles and mammary glands. Oxytocics hasten or facilitates childbirth, especially by stimulating contractions of the uterus, promote labor contractions and support ability to suckle young.

PARAMECICIDAL Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to kill protozoans of the genus Paramecium.

PARASITICIDE Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to kill parasites.

PARASYMPATHOMIMETIC Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to produce effects resembling those resulting from stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, such as increase salivary gland secretion, decrease heart rate, promote digestion, vasodilatation, etc.

PECTORAL Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to relieve respiratory or other chest conditions.

PEDICULICIDE Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to destroy lice.

PURGATIVE Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to cause watery evacuation of the intestinal contents by increasing peristalsis and producing watery stools or semi-fluid stools.

REFRIGERANT Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to produce coolness or reduce fever. May also decrease thirst and give a sensation of coolness to the system.

RELAXANT Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to diminish muscle or nervous tension.

RUBEFACIENT Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to produces a mild irritation, reddening of the skin and local vasodilatation thereby increasing the blood supply to the area of application.

SALURETIC Affects liver and detoxification systems due to its ability to facilitate the excretion of salt, (especially of sodium) through the kidneys.

SECRETAGOGUE Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to promote or stimulate secretion.

SECRETOLYTIC Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to break down secretions.

SEDATIVE Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to exert a soothing or tranquilizing effect and reduce anxiety, stress, irritability and excitement.

SIALAGOGUE. Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate and increase the secretion of saliva.

SIMPLE BITTER Affects digestive system and nutrition due to its ability to stimulate the tone of the gastrointestinal mucous membrane and stimulate the secretion of saliva and gastric juice reflexively by exciting the taste buds. A simple bitter is practically free from tannin and volatile oils and depends on the biter properties for their action.

SPASMOLYTIC Affects nervous system and nerve function due to its ability to act as an antispasmodic; arresting or preventing spasms, especially of smooth muscle.

SPERMICIDE Affects endocrine system and hormone function due to its ability to kill spermatozoa or sperm.

STIMULANT Affects all systems due to its ability to temporarily increase function and activity with a usually quick onset of action. A stimulant may be for a specific system such as "digestive stimulant" or a specific tissue such as "cardiac stimulant."

STIMULATING EXPECTORANT Affects immune system and reactivity due to its ability to stimulate the dilated bronchial mucus membranes and facilitate the removal of the secretions.
